On a cold and blustery March Tuesday evening, the Armadillos met in Geneva to play the tantalizing team Tonic. Faced with a friendly bunch of similar aged players, the Armadillos were raring to get on court.
Marney took on a change of position from C to play GK. Whilst Marney was missed in the centre court she played a great defensive game and said, “I enjoyed being able to watch the game from the end…seeing what was happening and coaching on passes was great fun”. Marney went on to say, “I enjoyed watching Carol (GD) hug the opposition every time they scored!”. We will be talking to Carol about that!
After the first quarter, when all players were finding ‘their game’, the Armadillos led by one goal with a score of 5 v 4. Ever determined the second quarter remained fast and furious. With a strong defence and some blinding shooting the Armadillos finished again in front with a three-goal difference; conceding just 5 goals and winning 7! Score of 12 v 9 at half time.
The third quarter saw a change in positions between Marney (GK) and Jane (WD). Being Jane’s debut match of the season, she continued to play hard with the courage and tenacity to go for every ball. This quarter really showed our improvement as a team working together with some great passing and determined interceptions. Again, the Armadillos finished in the lead with another three-goal difference 17 v 14.
The final quarter was really edge of the seat stuff. Despite being already ahead by three goals the Armadillos were fighting for a strong win. Kate (C) continued to out run the mighty Tonic’s Centre displaying moments of brilliance including her hand switch catching and throwing! With all the centre court players leaping for interceptions meant play was turned over numerous times which the Armadillos were able to convert into goals. Ange’s (GA) shooting was once again on top form and the Armadillos were able to gain more goals and remain ahead, BUT with just 5 mins to go disaster struck with Jane sustaining an injury to her leg. With no substitute the Armadillos had to play with just six! Frustratingly, team Tonic began winning goal after goal and went ahead with a three-goal lead, but not swayed the Armadillos dug in. In the last 10 seconds and behind by just one goal, team Tonic’s GK was penalised for obstructing Jodi (GS) off court. Able to step on court Jodi prepared to take the shot….but not before the final whistle was blown…this was a crushing defeat for the Armadillos but after a few moments of deliberation the officials confirmed the play should have continued and the shot attempted. Walking back to the post for the all-important final shot Jodi felt the pressure of the moment. With her team’s support and words of encouragement Jodi was able to secure an equalizer making the final score 21 v 21…an apt result for the spirit of both teams.
The sportsmanship through-out the game was infectious, with Tonic even offering the Armadillos a player, when they went down to six. Truly great spirit all round.
Rightly deserved the ‘Player of the Match’ was Carol our very own ‘Armadillos Terrier’. Well done Carol.
This game really showed how far the team has developed and improved. As Sue added, “for me the greatest accolade was, to hear from the Swiss Netball president that we have improved massively! That coupled with our team spirit and camaraderie made for a very enjoyable Tuesday evening!!”

Par un froid et venteux mars mardi soir, les Armadillos se sont rencontrés à Genève pour jouer l’équipe tentante Tonic. Face à un groupe amical de joueurs du même âge, les Armadillos étaient impatients d’être sur le court.
Marney a pris un changement de position de C pour jouer à GK. Alors que Marney a été ratée sur le court central, elle a joué un jeu défensif et a déclaré: “J’ai aimé regarder le match depuis la fin … voir ce qui se passait et m’entraîner sur les passes était très amusant”. Marney a continué en disant “J’ai aimé regarder Carol (GD) embrasser l’opposition chaque fois qu’ils ont marqué!”. Nous parlerons à Carol de ça!
Après la première période, quand tous les joueurs trouvaient «leur jeu», les Armadillos menaient par un but avec un score de 5 contre 4. Toujours déterminé, la deuxième période est restée rapide et furieuse. Avec une défense solide et quelques tirs aveuglants, les Armadillos ont terminé à nouveau devant avec une différence de trois buts; concédant seulement 5 buts et en gagnant 7! Score de 12 v 9 à la mi-temps.
La troisième période a vu un changement de position entre Marney (GK) et Jane (WD). Étant le premier match de Jane de la saison, elle a continué à jouer dur avec le courage et la ténacité d’aller pour chaque balle. Cette période a vraiment montré notre amélioration en tant qu’équipe travaillant ensemble avec quelques grandes passes et interceptions déterminées. Encore une fois, les Armadillos ont terminé en tête avec une autre différence de trois buts 17 v 14.
La dernière période était vraiment excitante. En dépit d’être déjà en avance de trois buts, les Armadillos se battaient pour une victoire solide. Kate (C) a continué à diriger le puissant centre de Tonic affichant des moments de brillance, y compris son interrupteur à main attraper et lancer! Avec tous les joueurs du centre qui sautaient pour des interceptions, le jeu a été retourné à de nombreuses reprises, ce que les Armadillos ont pu convertir en buts. Le tir d’Ange (GA) était de nouveau en pleine forme et les Armadillos ont pu gagner plus de buts et rester en tête, MAIS avec juste 5 minutes de désastre, Jane a subi une blessure à la jambe. Sans aucun substitut, les Armadillos devaient jouer avec seulement six! Frustrant, l’équipe Tonic a commencé à marquer après avoir marqué trois buts, mais n’a pas influencé les Armadillos. Au cours des 10 dernières secondes et derrière un seul but, l’équipe Tonic a été pénalisée pour avoir bloqué Jodi (GS) hors cour. Capable de monter sur le court Jodi se préparait à prendre le tir … mais pas avant le coup de sifflet final … c’était une défaite écrasante pour les Armadillos mais après quelques moments de délibération, les officiels ont confirmé que le jeu aurait dû continuer et le tir a tenté. En retournant au poste pour le dernier coup important, Jodi sentit la pression du moment. Avec le soutien de son équipe et des mots d’encouragement, Jodi a réussi à égaliser en obtenant le score final 21 v 21 … un résultat approprié pour l’esprit des deux équipes.
L’esprit sportif à travers le jeu était contagieux, avec Tonic offrant même les Armadillos un joueur, quand ils sont descendus à six ans. Vraiment un grand esprit tout autour.
Justement mérité le «joueur du match» était Carol notre «Armadillos Terrier» très propre. Bravo Carol.
Ce jeu a vraiment montré à quel point l’équipe a développé et amélioré. Comme Sue a ajouté, “pour moi la plus grande récompense a été d’entendre la présidente Netball Suisse que nous nous sommes améliorés massivement! Cela ajouté à notre esprit d’équipe et de camaraderie fait un très agréable mardi soir !! ” Un grand merci à tous nos joueurs et à Heather notre arbitre et à Bronwyn comme administrateur.
